During the Great Depression in the 1930s the St. Johnsbury Fire Department & Caledonian Record Publishing COmpany founded The Northeast Kingdom Santa Fund to help struggling families and their children.
They are still doing it; that’s almost a century that these professional lifesavers have enriched the lives of those who, at Christmas, don’t have the wherewithalto do it themselves.
Last year the Santa Fund served more than 1,000 children and about 650 families in St. Johnsbury, Lyndonville, Kirby, Concord, Waterford, Danville and Barnet.
Given our tough economy, there are plenty of families in need. The fire department stands ready to gather donated toys at the firehouse and to sort, pack and distribute them in the days leading up to Christmas.
The goal is to deliver up to 700 boxes of holiday food and gifts in hopes of meeting the region’s growing need. The special deliveries will be made the week before Christmas and no one who registers to receive will be left out.
Registration forms can be found each day in the newspaper OR COMPLETED HERE.
Through the generosity of donors and hard work of the fire department, each child receives three toys and a christmas dinner.
We urge everyone who can to join this worthy cause. It is far more gratifying to give than to receive.
Make a donation to the Santa Fund by calling the Santa Fund Hotline at 802-748-3000 or by dropping money or new toys for children – newborn to age 14 – off at the fire station on Main Street.
You can mail money donations to NEK Santa Fund, c/o Passumpsic Savings Bank, P.O. Box 38, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819-0038.
Nobody should go hungry or be cold and alone during this holiday celebration of light and life. if everyone gives a little, it will help a lot. Please give.
